Supreme Cantaloupe and Tiki Torch Echinaceas
Gardeners can choose from many unusual flower colors when it comes to the echinaceas. Supreme Cantaloupe and Tiki Torch echinaceas are only two of the unusual ones that are available.
Supreme Cantaloupe Echinacea
A variety of the common purple coneflower, Supreme Cantaloupe Echinacea was introduced around 2017 by Select Seeds. This award winning variety does very well in containers. It is suited to zones four through ten.
Supreme Cantaloupe Echinacea needs a sunny spot with well drained soil. It thrives in sandy soils. Of medium height, this plant reaches two to
2½ feet in height with a two foot spread. This plant is recommended for cut flowers. The stems are medium length.
The blossoms are a favorite of butterflies and bees. Flowering for a long period, these blooms resemble Gerbera daisies. The sweetly scented, double, non-fading blossoms are four inches wide.
The petals are soft orange like that of a ripe cantaloupe. As they age, these tend to droop and become pastel orangish-peach. As the blossoms mature, the cones become enlarged.
Tiki Torch Echinacea
Introduced by Dan Heims, this variety was a cross between a native yellow flowered Echinacea and Ruby Giant. It is recommended for zones four through nine. This plant has received numerous awards, and was given the Classic City Award at the University of Georgia/Athens plant trials.
Tiki Torch Echinacea reaches two to three feet in height with a spread of 1½ feet. Full sun to part sun is best. These stems makes a great cut flower. In addition, they can also be dried.
Tiki Torch Echinacea begins flowering in July and continues into fall if it is dead headed. The large blooms, 4½ inches wide, have a spicy fragrance. The long lasting blossoms have petals that are generally held horizontally, but occasionally these can droop just slightly. The wide petals are the deepest orange of the echinaceas.
White Swan Echinacea
White Swan Echinacea is a very outstanding older variety of the common purple coneflower. This plant has proven to be very reliable. Compared to the species plant, this is just as vigorous and the same size. The difference is in the flower color for which this variety is named.
This variety is suited to zones three through ten. The compact plants are two to three feet tall with a 1½ foot spread. It does best in full sun to part sun. Space them about two feet apart in the garden. The drought and heat tolerant plants are grown from seed, and bloom the very first year. The leaves are toothed.
This bears pure creamy white blossoms that begin emerging in July, and can continue into the fall. The blooms have petals that can droop as they age. The cones are yellow when young but mature to brownish-orange. The very showy blooms are four inches wide.
White Swan flower stems are perfect for cutting.
