Too Cold For June

Billy Manas

Itīs a painful thing to live as a wretch for so long--even more so
When your vows and leaf turning lead to nothing more than
An extreme of the other direction; stepped upon with as little
Regard as a well worn path in the woods behind the strip
Mall where junior high kids go to get cigarettes...your voice
Diminished and unheard, a minor chord buried in the mix
That no one is really conscious of...
These chords only create a certain dissonance felt by the
Unconscious. An uncomfortable scaring presence that fills
The listener with an inexplicable dread.
Perhaps all of life is an obstacle course to be
Overcome and hurdled...it is precious and short enough but
Also far too protracted when the crux of what you need is
A pesky afterthought to those you look upon to fill it. As I
Speak to whatever I choose to call God and sit unanswered at
Three A.M., it occurs to me to get up and get a sweater.
Itīs far too cold this late in June.
